In my experience Maths can often feel daunting to students, causing them to think they "just aren’t good at maths." But developing confidence in maths is vital to unlocking a student's full potential. With the right tools and mindset, every student can thrive in mathematics. In this article, we will explore actionable strategies to boost math confidence and inspire students to embrace the subject with enthusiasm.


Understanding Maths Anxiety


Maths anxiety affects a significant number of students, leading to underperformance. According to a study published in the journal Anxiety, Stress & Coping, about 70% of students experience some form of maths anxiety. This fear often comes from previous experiences, societal expectations, or a belief that maths skills are fixed traits.


Students need to acknowledge their anxiety instead of hiding from it. For instance, practicing relaxation techniques like deep breathing or visualisation can relieve stress before tests or challenging tasks. Engaging in physical activity before studying can also reduce anxiety levels, as research shows that exercise can provide immediate mental relief.
